Goose Pimples

I sat by the pool this morning with Sara, and was suddenly hit on my mind on how it is called when somebody got frightened or cold and their skin hair stand. Like a bumps appearing on the skin. Because I can't remember the term or the word, I asked Sara what it was, then she told me it is called goose pimples. I repeatedly asked , why it is called goose pimples? She don't even know the answer but she asked me to look the meaning in the computer.

Goose pimples appeared when we're cold or scared and our brain sends a message to tiny muscles under each of the small hairs on our skin. The muscles works to pull the hair straight up instead of lying on its side. It is also called goose bump that according to Wikipedia:

Goose bumps, also called goose flesh, chill bumps, chicken skin, or the medical term cutis anserina, are the bumps on a person's skin at the base of the body hairs which may involuntarily develop when a person is cold or experience strong emotions such as fear or awe. The reflex of producing goose bumps is known as horripilation, piloerection, or the pilomotor reflex. It occurs not only in human but also in many other mammals, a prominent example are porcupines which raise their quills when threatened, or sea waters when they encounter sharks or others predators.

So, why it is named goose pimples?

The name goose pimples get from the actual bumps which appear on goose's skin when its feathers are plucked.

Actually, it is one of man's instinctual reaction to any form of agitation whether pleasant or threatening. It was meant as a defense mechanism meant to counteract the perceived threat. It raises the adrenaline level of man to respond to a fight or flight reaction to the perceived threat. However, some persons develop this kind of reaction for some imaginary fear or threat, thus anxiety or psychotic reactions follow. Thanks for the post. God bless you always.
